Shrink a JPG or PNG's file size while keeping it presentable

A phone camera produces photos in the tens of megabytes — far past what most upload forms accept. Here's how to fix that without wrecking the photo.

The file downloads smaller, with a note showing how much was saved. Good compression targets the parts of the image that shrink well — the result should look basically the same to the eye.
Common mistakes to avoid
•Running the same image through multiple different compressors — repeated lossy compression compounds quality loss; compress once, from the original if possible.
•Expecting a big reduction on an already-optimized image — some photos, especially ones already exported for web, have little left to compress.
