Document Fingerprinting
Document fingerprinting: knowing which copy leaked
Document fingerprinting embeds a unique, invisible identifier into each copy of a file, so if it ever surfaces somewhere it shouldn't, you can tell exactly which copy — and which recipient — it came from.
What document fingerprinting is
When you send the same document to multiple people, a plain copy gives you no way to tell them apart once it's out in the world. Document fingerprinting solves this by embedding a small, unique identifier into each copy before it's sent — invisible to anyone reading the document, but recoverable by the tool that created it.
It's a different approach from a watermark, which is visible and can be cropped or edited out. A fingerprint is designed to survive normal handling of the file — copying pages, re-saving, printing — without disrupting the reading experience.
iGuardPDF's implementation is called Guarded fingerprinting: available as an option on 18 of its 27 PDF tools, it ties a unique fingerprint to your account on every protected document you create.
Who needs document fingerprinting
Anyone distributing the same file to multiple recipients
Board members, investors, or partners — each getting a copy that's individually traceable.
Legal and compliance teams
Cases where proving the source of a leaked filing carries real weight.
Businesses protecting internal documents
Pricing sheets, strategy decks, or product plans that shouldn't circulate outside the company.
Publishers and content owners
Anyone who needs to know which recipient's copy of a document ended up redistributed.
The problem: leaks with no way to trace them
When a confidential document leaks, the hardest part usually isn't knowing that it happened — it's figuring out which of the people who had access were responsible. Without a fingerprint, every recipient had an identical copy, so there's no way to distinguish one from another.
Fingerprinting removes that ambiguity before the fact: because each copy is unique from the moment it's created, a leaked copy can be matched back to the specific document it came from.
How iGuardPDF fingerprints a document
Unique per document, tied to your account
Every Guarded document gets its own identifier when it's created — not a shared marker reused across files.
Invisible to the reader
The fingerprint doesn't change how the document looks or reads.
Stored separately from the document content
The fingerprint record is kept apart from the file itself, so it isn't exposed by opening the document.
Pairs with revocation and evidence export
If a fingerprinted copy surfaces somewhere it shouldn't, you can revoke the originating share link and export the match as evidence — see /revoke-pdf-access and /pdf-leak-protection.
Common use cases
- →Sending an investor deck to multiple parties, each fingerprinted individually.
- →Fingerprinting an internal policy document before wider distribution.
- →Identifying which recipient's contract copy was leaked to a competitor.
- →Adding a fingerprint to a signed agreement before sending it to a large distribution list.
Frequently asked questions
How do invisible PDF fingerprints work?
A unique identifier is embedded into the document when it's created, invisible to anyone reading it but recoverable later if that specific copy needs to be traced. See /invisible-pdf-fingerprinting for the technical detail.
How can I identify who leaked a document?
If the document was fingerprinted before it was sent, a leaked copy can be matched back to the specific fingerprint, which is tied to the recipient it was originally sent to.
Is a fingerprint the same as a watermark?
No. A watermark is visible on the page and can potentially be cropped or edited out. A fingerprint is invisible and designed to survive normal handling of the file.
Which tools support fingerprinting?
Fingerprinting is available as a Guarded option on 18 of iGuardPDF's 27 tools, including Merge, Split, Compress, Password Protect, Watermark, and Sign PDF.
