PDF Security
PDF security that follows the document, not just the upload
Most "PDF security" tools stop at putting a password on a file. iGuardPDF's security layer is built for what happens next — after the document has left your hands and you still need to know who has it and whether they should.
What iGuardPDF's PDF security actually covers
There are two layers. The first is standard, available on any free tool: files travel over TLS, are processed and then deleted (never archived), and Password Protect applies real AES-256 encryption rather than a cosmetic lock. Full detail on data handling is on our /security page.
The second layer, called Guarded (Pro), is what makes iGuardPDF a document-security tool rather than just a converter. Turn it on for a document — via a checkbox on 18 of the 27 tool pages — and the output gets an invisible fingerprint unique to your account, a share link you can revoke at any time, and optional controls like a view limit, an expiry date, or country restrictions.
The goal isn't to make a document impossible to leak — nobody can honestly promise that. It's to make sure that if it does, you can trace it, and that you're never stuck with a link you can't shut off.
Who this is for
Anyone sending a confidential PDF
A contract, a financial statement, a legal filing — anything where it matters who ends up with a copy.
Businesses sharing internal documents externally
Board decks, pricing sheets, and vendor agreements that shouldn't circulate past the intended recipient.
Legal teams and agencies
Documents where proving who a leaked copy came from has real consequences.
Professionals handling sensitive client files
Anyone who needs to prove, not just assume, that a document stayed where it was supposed to.
The problem: a sent PDF is out of your control
Once a PDF leaves your outbox, a password is the only thing standing between it and anyone the recipient forwards it to — and a password doesn't tell you who forwarded it, or let you cut off access after the fact.
iGuardPDF's Guarded layer addresses both gaps: the fingerprint identifies which copy leaked, and the revocable share link means access isn't permanent just because the file was already sent.
The features
Invisible document fingerprinting
Every Guarded document carries a unique, invisible identifier tied to your account — see /document-fingerprinting.
Revoke access anytime
Cut off a share link instantly, even after it's been opened — see /revoke-pdf-access.
Burn-after-read
Set a view limit or expiry date so a link stops working on its own — see /burn-after-read-pdf.
Real AES-256 password protection
Password Protect applies genuine encryption, independently verified against the open-source poppler library.
Legal evidence export
Bundle the access log and fingerprint match into an exhibit if a leak needs to be traced and addressed formally.
Document analytics
See views, shares, and which countries opened a document, in one place.
Common use cases
- →Sending a board deck externally with a link you can cut off the moment the meeting ends.
- →Password-protecting a client financial report with AES-256 before it goes out.
- →Fingerprinting a leaked internal document to identify which recipient's copy it was.
- →Setting a document to expire automatically after a review window closes.
- →Exporting an access log as evidence when a confidential filing surfaces somewhere it shouldn't have.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best PDF security tool?
The right tool depends on what you need protected against. If you need a document to stay controllable after it's sent — traceable if it leaks, revocable if it shouldn't have gone out — iGuardPDF's Guarded layer is built specifically for that, on top of a full free PDF toolkit.
How do I protect a confidential PDF?
Start with Password Protect for real AES-256 encryption, then turn on the Guarded option to add an invisible fingerprint and a revocable share link so you retain control after it's sent.
Does PDF security mean the document can't leak?
No security measure can guarantee a document will never leak. iGuardPDF's approach is to make sure that if it does, you can identify which copy it was and cut off further access immediately.
Is document security only available on paid plans?
Standard protections — TLS in transit, deletion after processing, and AES-256 password protection — are available on every free tool. Fingerprinting, revocation, and burn-after-read are part of the Guarded/Pro tier.
