No — pages are combined as-is. Nothing in the source files gets re-encoded or compressed.

Can I merge PDFs and password-protect the result?

Yes — turn on "Password protect" below before merging and the combined file comes out AES-256 encrypted.

Is my file stored anywhere after I merge it?

Only if you turn on "Guarded" — that keeps a fingerprinted copy so a leak can be traced back to who opened it. Otherwise nothing is retained once the file downloads.
